Madrid, Spain, May 30, 2013 – Jorge Gallardo won the prize for his proposal to reintegrate young victims of violence into society.

Spanish university professor Jorge Gallardo was the outright winner of the third GRADUATE XXI contest, an Inter-American Development Bank (BID) initiative designed to prevent children dropping out of school in Latin America. Gallardo, who has a doctorate in Communication Sciences and is a professor at the Camilo Jos Cela University (UCJC) in Madrid, won the award for his proposal for socially reintegrating young people who have suffered from violence.

His project, entitled -Good memories mark the start of a new path-, won the majority of users’ votes on the programme’s website. -My idea involves expressing negative and positive memories, and posting the positive ones on a blog where they can be shared with other education centres all over the world, because this is the wonderful thing about the Internet and its global reach-, said Gallardo.

The international body said that, although access to education in Latin America has improved considerably over recent years, almost half of all Latin American students do not finish secondary school. Gador Manzano, head of the GRADUATE XXI project, said that initiatives such as this one -give all sectors of society a voice and the chance to actively participate in efforts to combat the school dropout problem and make a good-quality education possible for all-.

The objective of GRADUATE XXI is to involve Latin American citizens in improving the educational system and to increase the numbers completing secondary school education in the region.

Student Loan Crises

australia-education-system

We have a student loan crisis here in the United States. Student loan debt in aggregate, an unsustainable bubble of government inspired debt mania, has sky rocketed over the last 10 years nearly 400 percent. The total student loan debt is now nearing 1 trillion dollars with over 10% of that in default or delinquency and much of the rest teetering on collapse.

The government makes these loans available to all manner of students attending a wide variety of schools. Many of these loans are extended to students paying exorbitant tuition rates to traditional non-profit schools rewired and then transformed into “paper mills” or to a whole new category of for profit schools many with even more exorbitant tuition rates and seemingly in indirect proportion to the value received.

Students pay excessively high tuition rates for watered down curricula at a plethora of institutions offering degrees that don’t meet the smell test when compared to the value associated historically with the attainment of a 4-year degree. Many students even after graduation struggle to properly read, write, or do arithmetic as would be expected of a fully educated graduate of a traditional university.

Many profit and non-profit educational institutions are drinking at the government loan spout while at the same time “dummying down” the path to a degree. Government money is fueling the demand and the corresponding tuition inflation is creating a student loan bubble of catastrophic proportions. Many employers no longer value these degrees unless they are from certain very high-level schools; the kind of schools that even student loans from the government can’t cover.

Indentured servitude is a good metaphor for what is happening with the student loan fiasco; this is a truly abusive system that takes advantage of those with high hopes and trying to improve their lives. At least an indentured servant, historically, could learn a craft or a trade that was with them for life; what are these folks getting but membership in a new class of debtor?

With the passage of the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 student loan debt public or private is no longer dischargeable in bankruptcy court. Many of our younger citizens now carry their student loan debt around with them like the proverbial, “ball and chain” looking for a job from employers many of whom no longer value the degree. What is next? Will they bring back a “debtors prison”?

Our once very fine university system has been severely damaged by this phenomenon. Not all loans are bad and not all schools are “paper mills” but the trend is clear and this will end badly unless this system is rehabilitated.

World Class Universities Offer Education To Low Scoring Students

education-research

Getting an under graduate and a post-graduate degree is everyones dream, however, there are some people who are unable to secure top marks and fail to pursue their dream education from a reputed college or a well known university. In cases where people really couldnt afford quality higher education due to low scores, there are many universities which have come up with distance education MBA or other bachelor and post graduate degrees.

Moreover, many top notch universities have also open the door of high quality graduation and post graduation education to the students who fail to score good marks. And, to make all this possible, universities have decreased the minimum percentage of marks required, which is just 60% now to get admission in courses such as electronics engineering, BBA aviation and MBA power management. However, to get admission in world class universities with such low marks, students must have either scored or they need to score minimum at least 60% marks in secondary as well as senior secondary exams.

And usually, there are only a few courses that cannot be opted for by individuals after completing their schooling, viz. Bachelor of Technology, BDS and MBBS. These are the courses which a student from a science background can opt for, but there is one more glitch. In the Indian education system students having physics, chemistry, biology, and math can get in any of the available courses. But, students having physics, chemistry and math with computer science can never opt for BDS or MBBS as their course choice.

However, it is totally different in case of Master of Business Administration, as students from any graduation background can easily opt for this course and acquire and hone their management skills. But, there are some specific management courses, which have been started by some leading universities, and those courses cannot be pursued by each and every student, and some of those courses are post graduate management programs are MBA in Information Systems, Infrastructure Management MBA etc.

Students having an engineering or Bachelor of Science degree are the only ones who can pursue these courses. But to get admission in any of the MBA programs in any of the worlds best universities, students must score or have scored minimum 50% in their 10th, 12th and graduation.

Common Homeschooling Issues And How To Address Them

private-education

There is no shortage of reasons why you may be considering homeschooling your child or children as opposed to enrolling them into a traditional school environment. In households where moving is a frequent occurrence, it can be easier to homeschool your child as opposed to constantly uprooting and resettling them into local schools. You may also have moral objections to the curriculum offered in public schools, and the alternative private institution is not financially feasible. Additionally, some parents of children with learning disabilities want to offer their child the close, one-on-one attention they need to thrive in a learning environment.

Of course, there’s a large gap between knowing that homeschooling is the right choice for your child, and being prepared to carry it out. Fortunately, there are countless resources available to you to help you along the way. The following tips are meant to address common concerns many have about the topic in a manner that is helpful and productive.

One of the most common worries of parents who homeschool is that their child won’t receive the same level of socialization they would in a traditional schooling environment. Fortunately, this is also one of the easiest problems to address. Enroll your child in extracurricular activities that stimulate their interests and give them the opportunity to interact with peers who share these interests. Activities can include anything from service organizations like 4-H and the Boy or Girl Scouts to organized sports and karate lessons. In this way, you can let your child form meaningful and lasting social bonds with other children based on a shared interest in an activity.

Another common worry is the construction of a curriculum. Even well educated parents may feel unqualified when it comes to finding teachable material that keeps their child’s interest, much less meets state standards. Here is where it is extremely helpful to reach out to other parents in your area, as well as for local homeschooling organizations for advice and other means of support. These organizations will be well educated on what is required of parents and may be able to make teaching supplies available to you.

Finally, an extremely common fear among parents is that the financial, personal, and time commitment required will be overwhelming. While the final determination as to whether homeschooling is right for your child lies solely on you, a little research and communication can help you make an informed decision on the matter. Speak openly and honestly with your partner about finances, and whether you will be able to meet expenses with a single income earner. Don’t neglect to talk about the additional emotional support you will need when things get stressful in your new classroom. Again, local homeschooling organizations can help you here as well. Most importantly, speak to your child, and make sure he or she understands that you are both embarking on a mutually beneficial education experience together.

Scientific Research Into The Benefits Of Montessori Education

education-6

The University of Virginia conducted a variety of studies on academic performance, social skills, behavioral tendencies and psychological norms of Montessori students who were five and twelve years of age. They then did comparable research on non-Montessori school children of the same ages. The study was recently published in the academic journal Science by Dr Angeline Lillard, one of the universitys professors of psychology at their Charlottesville campus. The results of the study lead to surprising headlines on mainstream media sources such as the Guardian in the United Kingdom and CBS in the United States.

In brief, the Montessori Method was developed over nearly four decades by the education and psychology specialist Maria Montessori. Her research and implementation of what is now the Montessori Method started at the beginning of the 20th century and has continued to be implemented in its purist forms and in other cases contextually adapted to meet social and cultural norms. The core principles stay the same regardless of contextualization though. First and foremost, the student is provided a safe and stimulating environment where they are granted the authority to follow their natural instinct to gravitate towards wanting to learn. Teachers guide students through the self-directed learning process and play the role as the facilitator and observer more so than the traditional teacher model. Sharing, fairness and inter-age socialization are encouraged while the system downplays the need for competition and stress in the classroom. Testing and grading is not a standard within the original methodology, but in countries such as the United States, children do complete the national standard exams. The culture of a Montessori school is sharply different than non-Montessori schools but the goal of educating the students is the same. But which is more effective?

Researchers from The University of Virginia found that the five year olds at Montessori schools had better math and reading skills and tested better than those pupils at public and non-Montessori private schools. Even without regular testing (as in public schools), the Montessori students were able to spell, utilize grammar and execute punctuation better. Their socialization and problem solving skills were vastly more developed over their counterparts as well.

Although Montessori twelve year olds scored similarly in math and reading skills on examinations, those who were observed and tested were significantly more creative and sophisticated with their writing skills. But due to the inter-age interaction and methodology of the Montessori school system, children demonstrated a more secure sense of self, and scored much higher on social and behavioral tests.

The research suggests that the Montessori Method is in fact the better education system, but Dr. Lillards main conclusion is that she is looking forward to further researching the topic nationally and potentially internationally to come up with more conclusive evidence.

Clep Testing Has Proven To Be Beneficial For Busy College Students Taking On Multiple Responsibiliti

education-6

Gone are the days were traditional college students are focused only on their education. College students are now forced to take on many more responsibilities, CLEP testing has proved a very useful tool. These additional responsibilities include family, community/religious involvement, work (both full-time and part-time), and multiple extra-curricular activities. CLEP tests have made time management much easier for these time-stretched students. CLEP exams also allow students to lighten their overall coursework, bypass general requirements, save thousands of dollars, and take home a degree much sooner.

One way that CLEP tests are utilized by students are to bypass introductory coursework to gain access to more interesting, advanced classes. CLEP exams are also used to bypass sitting through generic requirements that lie outside a students major. For example, an economics student can pass an American Government CLEP test to bypass their political science requirement. CLEP tests are also used by students nearing graduation to gain credit for introductory classes outside their major in order to reduce their last years course load so that they have more time to focus on graduation, internships, and beginning their post-graduate career.

The standard CLEP test takes only 90 minutes and will cover the information that would be covered in the first two years (introductory years) of college and are only $70. The College Board, who is the governing body of CLEP tests, currently have 34 unique CLEP exams which cover a wide range of topics. As they have continued to expand, CLEP testing centers are offered within driving distance of any college student. In fact, CLEP testing centers are even available on some military bases. Additionally, almost 3,000 colleges and universities accept CLEP scores as a replacement for traditional college classes.

CLEP tests are especially useful for adults who are getting their college education and already have the required knowledge from their work experience. CLEP exams are also widely utilized by students from other countries to gain foreign language credits.

In order to prepare for CLEP tests, students have many options including: comprehensive CLEP study guides, CLEP study software, and even CLEP online study services. There are even CD’s, DVD’s, and textbooks dedicated to helping a student to excel in their CLEP exams.

Before any student actually takes a CLEP test, it is important to have a conversation with their advisor. Many universities and colleges have different rules about course each CLEP test can replace as well as what CLEP tests are accepted, if any, by the institution. Academic advisors also will be able to assist the student with which CLEP study materials will be most effective for each student.

India Education has to stay in Government Hands

australia-education-system

The budgetary allocation for india education, should be revised every five years, Right now, the money allocated for education is far too inadequate. We need to set apart at least 10 per cent of the GDP to meet the educational requirements of india. Inviting private players will turn the education sector into an educational bazaar. They are interested only in making money and lure students with false promises.

People who impart education should be able to identify with the students and display an active interest in their future. If the corporate houses are really interested in making a contribution to the india education sector, they should provide money to the government or institute scholarships or fellowships for the students. The point is if the government really has the will, then it can find the money.

The salaries of professors in colleges should be fixed at reasonable levels. The government will actually be saving money by rationalising salary structures and this money can then be spent on providing quality education to students. The government is also not filling up existing vacancies in universities and colleges. The money thus saved can be diverted for educational purposes as well. The disparities in salary levels become more glaring among guest lecturers. Even after the recommendation of the University Grants Commissions pay review committee that guest lecturers be paid a salary of Rs 25,000 per month or Rs 1,000 per lecture, they are at present offered just Rs 200 to 300 for every lecture. Even the various teachers associations are not talking about the poor salaries doled out to the guest teachers.

Another important point is that india education should percolate down to the grass-roots if it has to have the desired effect. The government, instead of helping the poor to get educated, is withdrawing financial support for the education of the downtrodden. Nearly 30 years ago even people living in rural areas could access good education because the fees were very low. The government also displayed a relatively more positive attitude towards imparting education..

Today, people are going to big cities to pursue higher education after paying exorbitant fees. Even then, very few enroll for higher education in india. Schools and institutions of higher education in india should be allotted sufficient amount of money to take care of the requirements of the student community in rural areas. Education must not remain in urban areas alone, It has to reach the village level.
